Dr John Bashford is a Science and Medical graduate of the University of Queensland (1980). He initially worked in Brisbane and the United Kingdom before completing postgraduate studies in Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He practiced in Clinical Haematology, Medical Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Wesley and Mater Private Hospitals from 1992 until 2017 when he stepped down from full-time private practice. He was the Founding Director of the Wesley Clinic Stem Cell Transplant Laboratory and Clinical Service from 1996 until 2017.
He was past Chair of the Board of Management for the Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australia Research Centre (now Icon Research) and Board Chair of Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australia (now Icon Cancer Centre) from 1998 to 2007. Dr Bashford remained active as a Director of HOCA from 1994 until Jan 2012. He was one of the founders of Icon Cancer Care and has made a significant contribution to private cancer care over the last 20 years. Throughout his career he has been a strong advocate for the role of cancer research in private cancer care holding representative positions on Advisory Boards to Government, Industry and Health Insurers.
Dr Bashford continues to play an integral role at Icon Group as Director of Research which sees him leading the extension of the initial vision of clinical cancer research in a private hospital setting in Brisbane into the extended Icon Group network throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Dr Bashford is passionate about cancer research and the continual development of new medicines and techniques for cancer patients of today and in to the future.
