Professor Mark Compton AM


Having led some of the most reputed organisations in Australia, Mark brings extensive experience in healthcare to his role as Icon Group Chairman.

Mark’s impressive suite of current board and academic appointments includes, Chairman of ASX listed companies Sonic Healthcare and Non-Executive Director at  Next Science; Adjunct Professor in Management (Healthcare Leadership) at Macquarie University Business School; Non-Executive Chairman of not-for-profit St Luke’s Care and Lord Prior (Chairman) of the Order of St John, an organisation to which he has dedicated over 45 years of volunteer service through St John Ambulance. Mark also held appointments as the Chairman of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Director of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA), Non-Executive Director of Macquarie University Hospital and Non-Executive Director of Independent Practitioner Network Limited.

Mark’s extensive executive career saw him as Chief Executive Officer of St Luke’s Care, Immune Systems Therapeutics Limited, The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, and the formerly ASX listed companies SciGen Limited and Alpha Healthcare Limited.

In recognition of his contribution to and impact on the Australian healthcare sector Mark was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in January 2010, alongside the Centenary Medal of the Commonwealth of Australia for his service to the community. He was appointed a Knight in the Order of St John in 2004 and promoted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to Bailiff Grand Cross, the highest grade in the Order of St John, an honour presented to him by the Grand Prior of the Order, His Royal Highness, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester at Kensington Palace, in 2018.

Mark is an active volunteer firefighter with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.
