Dr Ramsay trained as a Radiation Oncologist in the UK before moving to a consultant post at Royal Brisbane Hospital and subsequently the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. His main clinical interests have been in breast, gynaecological and skin cancers. He has had a long-term interest in clinical and basic research having completed a Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and worked as a clinical scientist for four years at the University of Cambridge Department of Clinical Oncology. He also held the position of Head of the QRI Laboratory in Translational Research at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) for 10 years and during this time completed a doctorate titled ‘Predicting the Response to Cancer Treatment’.
Dr Ramsay co-founded Radiation Oncology Queensland (ROQ), now Icon Cancer Centre in 2005 which introduced a local radiation therapy service to Toowoomba in regional Queensland. This business grew exponentially with the opening of centres at the Gold Coast, Springfield, and Cairns before becoming the first radiation oncology business within Icon Group. Dr Ramsay was Director of Icon Group until 2017. He is also chair of the Radiation Therapy Advisory Group and Associate Professor at the University of Queensland.
In his current role as Co-Director of Research (radiation therapy and radiation medicine) Dr Ramsay applies his clinical expertise and patient-centric care to grow the group’s radiation medicine trials portfolio and provide greater access to clinical research. He is also Director of Icon Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and support of clinical trials and research
