The Opportunity
Epic Pharmacy Northern Beaches is currently seeking an experienced clinical pharmacist to join our team at Northern Beaches Hospital in the role of a full-time AMS and Clinical Pharmacist.  Together with AMS Infectious Diseases physicians, the infection prevention team, pharmacy department and hospital executive members, the successful candidate will direct the antimicrobial stewardship program at Northern Beaches Hospital.

This position is a full-time 12-month contract, working 38 hours per week (76 hours per fortnight).

About the Role
Actively liaising with key stakeholders including prescribers, pharmacists and hospital executive, to ensure optimal use of antimicrobials and promote evidence-based practice. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship service involving prescriptions reviews, real-time guidance to prescribers, antimicrobial education for clinicians, data collection and reporting, internal resource development or review and antimicrobial stock management. The AMS team must also ensure the Northern Beaches Hospital AMS program meets accreditation standards (National Safety Quality Health Services Standards).

Working Monday to Friday, this role is ideally suited to someone with an already experienced clinical background in hospital pharmacy, looking to take the next step in their career and expand their horizons in a specialist role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work together with AMS Infections diseases physicians, infection prevention team, pharmacy department and hospital executive members to direct and deliver a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship program.
  • Work in collaboration with the AMS team to ensure the AMS program meets accreditation standards
  • Round twice weekly with ID consultant to review restricted antimicrobial prescriptions and provide real-time guidance and feedback to prescribers
  • Review antimicrobial prescriptions referred by clinical pharmacists for supply approval and provide real-time guidance and feedback to prescribers if appropriate
  • Collect data on AMS team reviews and interventions to generate quarterly reports that are evaluated at the Northern Beaches Hospital AMS Committee meetings
  • Provide collection and submission of Antimicrobial Usage data to National Antimicrobial Utilisation Surveillance Program [NAUSP]
  • Provide internal and external education to clinicians, including presenting at Grand Rounds on behalf of the AMS team
  • Organise promotional activities and resources for Antimicrobial Awareness Week
  • Develop and review policies, guidelines and protocols relating to antimicrobials
  • Develop and contribute towards quality improvement projects relating to antimicrobials
  • Contribute to providing a clinical pharmacy service to ward areas in order to fulfil departmental needs

About You
You are an experienced and driven Clinical Pharmacist with a passion for antimicrobial stewardship and providing gold-standard clinical care. Your ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, combined with your strong clinical knowledge and attention to detail, enables you to contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes.
  
To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Current general registration with AHPRA as a Pharmacist, with no restrictions on practice
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in the provision of clinical pharmacy services in a hospital pharmacy setting, ideally with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant state and national policies that facilitate and support Antimicrobial Stewardship including familiarity with NSQHS Standards and Clinical Care Standards.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with both clinicians and executives
  • Proficient writing skills to appropriately review and develop resources and protocols for internal clinical use
  • Basic computer competency for data collection and report generation in excel
  • Strong clinical knowledge and decision-making skills to support safe and effective medication use in complex cases
  • Well-developed time management and organisational abilities, with the capacity to prioritise effectively in a high-pressure setting
  • A proactive and enthusiastic approach to continuous improvement and professional development
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care with a strong focus on safety and evidence-based practice

Site Information

Opened in 2018, the 488-bed Northern Beaches Hospital delivers high-quality care to both public and private patients. The hospital offers extensive inpatient and outpatient services, including dialysis and cancer care. It features a 50-bed Emergency Department, a 20-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 14 state-of-the-art operating theatres, two cardiac catheter labs, and four procedural rooms. The hospital provides comprehensive services in surgery, critical care, and intensive care, alongside dedicated departments for Maternity, Paediatrics, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Haematology, Oncology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, and Infectious Diseases.

Epic Pharmacy Northern Beaches is in the hospital foyer and serves as the hub for our pharmacy operations. Our team of over 50 pharmacists, interns, residents, and technicians provide exceptional care to our patients. The pharmacy team is structured into operational (dispensary and oncology) and inpatient clinical services, ensuring comprehensive support across all hospital wards.
