Icon will bring the first private radiation oncology facility to Geelong, set to open in 2019.

In Geelong, the incidence of cancer is expected to grow by over 40% by 2031, and more than half of all patients are expected to require some form of radiation therapy during the course of their treatment. The new Icon Cancer Centre will provide patients and their families with further choice when planning their care and will have the capacity to treat 500 new patients a year.

“With cancer incidences on the rise, the figures clearly indicate the need for additional cancer care services. This new state-of-the-art centre will provide the people of Geelong with increased choice and greater access to advanced radiation therapy treatments, the likes of which are absolutely world-class,” Mark Middleton, Icon Group CEO.

The centre will have a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, and will open with a full remit of radiation therapy techniques and technology including stereotactic radiation therapy, a sophisticated technique used to treat small tumours commonly located in the brain, spine or lung. This technology provides pinpoint precision to multiple tumours while limiting radiation doses to surrounding healthy tissue. It will be the first in the region to offer advanced stereotactic treatment with the ability to treat complex multiple brain tumours and metastatic disease.

“Continued investment in the best technology available will ensure people have a greater choice. A cancer diagnosis is difficult for anyone but providing quality care ensures streamlined and effective therapy, and reduces the burden of cancer on the patient and their loved ones.”

The centre will be located with the Epworth Geelong Private Hospital and will support the realisation of a comprehensive cancer service at Epworth Geelong. Radiation therapy services delivered at Icon Cancer Centre will be available to patients who access both public and private healthcare and will reduce the waitlist burden on the public system.
