Icon announces radiation oncology services at Windsor Gardens, South Australia

This World Cancer Day, Icon Cancer Centre Windsor Gardens announces they will be expanding their current cancer treatment services to include radiation oncology with a capacity to deliver 9,000 treatments annually.

The $30 million cancer care facility opened in November 2018 to address Adelaide’s ageing population and provide increased medical oncology and haematology services for the community in Adelaide’s north eastern corridor. It is estimated South Australian cancer incidences will increase by 31% over the next 15 years with an indication that over half of all patients are likely to require radiation therapy treatment.

Icon will provide patients with radiation therapy treatment for all cancer types. Since opening, the centre in Windsor Gardens, Icon has been delivering the latest in chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders to the people of Adelaide.

With more people being diagnosed every year, we feel our mission to reduce the impact of cancer by delivering the best care possible to as many people as possible has never been more important.” said Icon Group Chairman and Founder, Stuart Giles.

“The addition of radiation oncology services will bring a holistic approach to cancer care under the one roof and ensure the Adelaide community are supported every step of the way from diagnosis to treatment. Cancer is a difficult time for anyone and we’re proud to provide the support and expertise to make a real difference to local cancer patients.”

Cancer is an important issue within the community with over 10,000 people cancer diagnosed in in South Australia each year. Furthermore, people living with or surviving cancer is expected to increase by 72% by 2040 due to an ageing population . The need for access to cancer treatment has never been more important.

Patients do not require private health insurance to receive radiation therapy treatments, with up to 80-90% of costs reimbursed by Medicare. Alongside this, the centre offers chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders for privately insured patients.
