Rhys Fitzgerald

Icon Group’s 2019 Middleton Scholar

Rhys' career journey at Icon

Rhys completed his Bachelor in Radiation Therapy in 2009 and went on to work in the public health system from 2010 until 2015. During this time he endeavoured to understand what he could do personally, to ensure better outcomes for patients. He went on to complete a Masters degree in which he investigated novel techniques for lung cancer patients.

Knowing that survival rates were low following standardly fractionated radiation therapy, and that new treatment options like stereotactic ablative radiation therapy (SABR) were becoming more mainstream, Rhys investigated ways in which we could deliver these novel techniques, in the shortest time possible, while reducing toxicities to the patient.

At the end of 2015, Rhys joined Icon Group with an eager interest in learning more of the management of cancer care. Since joining Icon, Rhys has worked in both radiation oncology and medical oncology, managing both and has worked closely with both internal and external stakeholders to provide holistic care to our patients. During this time Rhys has been a Radiation Therapist as well as Site Manager at several Icon cancer centres where he has been able to couple clinical experience alongside management skills to continue to improve outcomes for patients.

He currently sits on two editorial boards of international journals as associate editor and has completed a Masters of Business Administration and is a strong advocate for radiation therapy, sitting on panels for the national professional body ASMIRT. He is also the Deputy Chair of Icon Group’s Radiation Therapy Practice Unit (RTPU) helping to provide structure and governance to Icon’s radiation therapy team.
