Prof Michael Poulsen announces retirement

Icon Writers / 15 Jan, 2025

After a distinguished career spanning several decades, we bid farewell and express our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Michael Poulsen, one of the co-founders of Icon Group, who is retiring from his role as a Radiation Oncologist.

We take a look back on his career and pay tribute to the significant contribution he has made to oncology.

Visionary

Throughout his career, Mike has exemplified collaborative leadership, working with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, allied health professionals, and surgeons to improve treatment outcomes.

Over his distinguished and respected career, Mike has played a pivotal role in establishing what Icon is today. In 2007, Mike alongside Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton and fellow Radiation Oncologists, A/Prof Kumar Gogna and Dr Jonathan Ramsay started Radiation Oncology Queensland (ROQ) in Toowoomba, now Icon Cancer Centre. This centre was a cornerstone of Icon’s mission today – to deliver the best care possible to as many people as possible, as close to home as possible.

Mike was dedicated to the success of our Toowoomba centre, truly believing in how much the team would change health outcomes for regional Queensland. He built strong relationships with doctors and healthcare providers and had a steadfast commitment to grow our services to more regions, contributing to developing our centres in Cairns, Gold Coast, Greenslopes and Springfield.

Innovation and dedication to care

Throughout his 35+ year career, Mike has gone above and beyond for his patients and is respected for his approachable and easy-going manner by his peers. He has worked in both the public and private sector and spent time practising in London. During his time at Icon, Mike has consulted at numerous Icon cancer centres across Southeast Queensland and was crucial in the success of our first integrated Icon Cancer Centre at North Lakes in Brisbane.

He is also widely published and has over 150 peer reviewed publications and has made significant contributions to research and the field of skin cancer. He also helped drive our early adoption of brachytherapy and innovative non-invasive radiotherapy technologies treating carcinomas of the skin.

A lasting difference

In 2020, Mike was awarded the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Roentgen Medal in recognition of his significant contribution to the college and the field of Radiation Oncology. He is highly respected by his peers and the wider healthcare profession.

Thank you Mike!

Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton OAM recognises Mike’s significant contribution.

“Mike’s dedication, vision and endless care for patients exemplify everything we value at Icon,” said Mark.

“Personally, I will miss his counsel deeply and acknowledge the incredible contribution he has made to Icon and the Australian oncology landscape.”

Please join us in thanking Mike and wishing him all the very best in this next chapter of his life as he enjoys quality time with his family and pursuing his passion for painting.
