Icon Cancer Centre (Icon) North Adelaide has officially opened its doors and is now treating patients at the new $300 million Eighty Eight O’Connell Health Precinct, following the precinct’s official opening last week.

The milestone represents an important advancement in expanding access to world-class cancer care across Adelaide, with the centre already delivering cutting-edge treatment for patients in the city’s central and northern suburbs.

The opening of the new health precinct was celebrated by members of the community, health professionals and local leaders including Premier of South Australia Peter Malinauskas, Lord Mayor of Adelaide Dr Jane Lomax-Smith, and Jamie McClurg, Executive Charman at Commercial and General.

The event featured speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and attendance from local councillors, guests and the wider Adelaide community. The Icon Cancer Centre North Adelaide team was also proudly on hand to celebrate their centre’s vital role in the health hub.

Icon Cancer Centre AUNZ CEO, Paul Fenton praised the world-class facilities and what it means for the community.

“It’s a privilege for Icon to be part of this incredible new health precinct,” Paul said.

“Our team is passionate about bringing the very best in cancer treatment and technology to North Adelaide, helping to make high-quality care more accessible for local patients and their families.”

Advanced cancer care, closer to home

The new centre in North Adelaide is equipped with advanced treatment technology, including a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator (linac).

Featuring advanced techniques such as stereotactic radiation therapy, Varian’s HyperArcadvanced treatment delivering highly targeted, high-rose radiation for brain metastases, and Varian’s IDENTIFY Surface Guidance System, which uses real-time tracking to monitor patient’s movements and adjust their positioning, eliminating the need for permanent tattoos to maximise accuracy and comfort for the patients throughout the treatment.

Innovation, at scale

The new North Adelaide cancer centre is part of Icon Group’s broader $50 million investment into South Australia, which was first announced in 2021.

Since then, Icon has introduced a new cancer centre in Noarlunga (South Adelaide), increased accessibility to clinical trials and opened a state-of-the-art Slade Health TGA licensed facility in Woodville, capable of delivering over 300,000 chemotherapy infusions per year.

Icon Cancer Centre North Adelaide marks the fourth site in South Australia, highlighting Icon’s commitment to enhancing local access to world-class cancer care.
