Icon Radiation Oncologist A/Prof Michael Penniment has been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to medicine and radiation oncology in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
A/Prof Penniment has spent his 26 year career in radiation oncology dedicated to ensuring rural and regional cancer patients receive access to the best possible cancer treatment. As a founder of Darwin’s Alan Walker Cancer Centre (AWCC), he has led the way for research into improving Indigenous cancer care – highlighting the need for culturally sensitive models of care and reducing geographical and cultural barriers in accessing cancer treatment.
He continues to maintain an active interest in research, quality improvement and governance, as the lead for the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Particle Therapy Group and member of several leading cancer trial groups including the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and Trans Tasman Oncology Group (TROG).
