A/Prof Michael Penniment appointed a Member of the Order of Australia
Icon doctor recognised in Australia Day Honours
Icon Radiation Oncologist A/Prof Michael Penniment has been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to medicine and radiation oncology in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
A/Prof Penniment has spent his 26 year career in radiation oncology dedicated to ensuring rural and regional cancer patients receive access to the best possible cancer treatment. As a founder of Darwin’s Alan Walker Cancer Centre (AWCC), he has led the way for research into improving Indigenous cancer care – highlighting the need for culturally sensitive models of care and reducing geographical and cultural barriers in accessing cancer treatment.
He continues to maintain an active interest in research, quality improvement and governance, as the lead for the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Particle Therapy Group and member of several leading cancer trial groups including the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and Trans Tasman Oncology Group (TROG).
A/Prof Penniment has also been recognised for his dedication to improving quality of life for patients during treatment and was awarded the Best of ASTRO (USA) and Trial Excellence Award (TROG) in 2014 for his work on a clinical trial for palliative oesophageal cancer patients.
With a passion for the advancement of radiation therapy to benefit current and future patients, A/Prof Penniment has been instrumental in the opening of the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy which is set to be the first proton therapy unit in the Southern Hemisphere. He is involved in a number of Australian research projects, lending his expertise in planning and developing new radiation therapy facilities.
In his role at Icon, A/Prof Penniment continues to make a significant difference for cancer patients across Australia – a testament to his passion for cancer care and service to radiation oncology as part of this very well-deserved honour.
