A career in quality cancer care

Catherine Di Stasi is currently Icon’s Group Manager of Clinical Governance and Quality and has held several clinical roles throughout her 13-year tenure.

Catherine completed a Bachelor of Applied Science at RMIT University and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of South Australia. She started her career as a radiation therapist at Alfred Health in Melbourne where she completed her intern year, then working abroad to return to Alfred Health where she become a Deputy Charge Radiation Therapist.

Catherine began her journey with Icon as a Charge Radiation Therapist at what is now the Icon Cancer Centre in Cairns, Queensland. She went on to become the Site Manager at the new Icon Cancer Centre at Gold Coast University Hospital. As Site Manager, Catherine utilised her clinical skills and leadership to support the delivery of radiation oncology services in partnership with the public hospital. She ensured operations ran effectively and efficiently with consideration to workflow management and resources, ensuring the best possible care was delivered to patients daily.

She has also held State based roles, including Regional Manager – supporting the implementation of Icon’s strategic goals across seven cancer centres in Southeast Queensland, and Radiation Oncology Operations Manager where she helped establish and enhance Icon’s quality of radiation oncology services with a focus on improving the patient experience. Catherine was also instrumental in supporting the establishing the first Radiation Oncology services at Farrer Park and spent 12 months in Singapore supporting the expansion into the ASEAN market.

Catherine transitioned into the newly formed Clinical Care team as International Change and Quality Manager where she led ongoing quality and accreditation improvements across the group’s ASEAN, China and Vietnam services. She played an integral role in Icon Cancer Centre Singapore becoming the first private oncology centre in Asia to receive the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) EQuiP Accreditation Certification.

Now as Group Manager of Clinical Governance and Quality, Catherine oversees the global direction of clinical governance and quality standards across Icon’s cancer care services with a focus on continuous improvement. She juggles several different regional accreditations, requirements and standards and leads a team of clinical governance and quality specialists and coordinators across all modalities of cancer care.

Some of her recent achievements include – leading the success of Icon Cancer Centre Australia’s first SNAP (Short Notice Assessment Pathway) accreditation audit assessments which performed well above national standards with no major recommendations, and the second round of ACHSI assessments for our six cancer centres in Singapore, achieving three years’ accreditation. This accreditation was a group-wide effort and included a five-day virtual assessment with assessors meeting with teams from Singapore and Australia.

In 2020, Catherine was selected to be part of Icon’s Future Leaders Forum, a professional development program dedicated to empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders. She has also been a mentor to Future Leaders Forum alumni and continues to focus on continued learning to develop and grow for herself, the people around her and the organisation.

Catherine says it’s an honour to be awarded the Middleton Scholarship.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have held numerous roles at Icon and gain new skills and experiences which have propelled me in my career; this is another exciting opportunity not only for my own professional development but also for my team and Icon’s ability to bring more care to more people,” said Catherine.

“I’d like to thank Mark and his family for investing in people and providing these opportunities that can only benefit our workforce and directly the patients in our care.”

As part of her scholarship program Catherine will be attending the Union for International Cancer Control’s (UICC) World Cancer Congress in Geneva, Switzerland this September which will include tours of UICC offices and meetings with City Cancer Challenge (C/Can).
