Icon Group announced the largest confirmed order in Australian history for world-leading radiation therapy technology, confirming an investment in excess of $50m USD for ten TrueBeam linear accelerators and all associated software and services with Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, California.

More than an agreement to acquire, the completed order means accelerators are now in production to be installed within the year, and there is an expectation the order will soon increase to meet the needs of Icon Group’s international expansion.

Varian’s TrueBeam systems is an advanced medical linear accelerator capable of fast and precise image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery.

“This technology will enable us to offer our patients the best care,” said Mark Middleton, CEO of Icon Group. “And today’s announcement marks the continuation of a great partnership with Varian. This partnership is truly global as we begin our expansion into South East Asia and other territories with a view to ensuring everyone can access the latest and best technology. The first rollout of these machines has commenced with them being operational over the next 12 months within Australia.”

Varian Medical Systems, Inc, of Palo Alto, California, is the world’s leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiation.

The Varian TrueBeam system is equipped with a high dose delivery rate that enables most treatments to be completed faster than was possible with earlier generations of radiotherapy technology. It incorporates numerous technical innovations that dynamically synchronise imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and dose delivery during a treatment procedure.

“TrueBeam is improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer care,” said Kolleen Kennedy president of Varian’s Oncology Systems business. “TrueBeam offers unique capabilities including a treatment couch with six degrees of movement that enables more angles of attack on the tumour, while minimising exposure of other organs to radiation.”

TrueBeam has been designed to advance the treatment of lung, breast, intracranial, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer.
