Recognising the strength of our nursing team this Cancer Nurses Day

Today, 15 August, marks the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia (CNSA) inaugural Cancer Nurses Day – a day to highlight the exceptional care provided by the 7,500 cancer nurses Australia-wide and champion their contributions to improving patient outcomes.

Our cancer nurses play a pivotal role in what we do at Icon and in the field of cancer care across Australia. Recognising their contributions and continuing to provide opportunities for them to learn and progress in their careers is crucial in ensuring we can provide the best care possible.

Group Director of Nursing, Margie Hjorth is committed to elevating cancer nurses in Australia and beyond.

“At Icon I’m very proud to lead an exceptional group of cancer nurses dedicated to improving the patient experience and ultimately helping make a difference to people going through a cancer diagnosis,” said Margie.

Within Australia, Icon employs more than 320 nurses specialising in a wide range of oncology positions, from assistant, enrolled and graduate nurses through to practice nurses, clinical nurse specialists, cancer care coordinators, nurse managers and specific cancer specialist nurses. Icon provides clear career progression and varied positions to suit special interests and clinical expertise.

“We recently developed our Nursing Career Pathways to help our nurses expand, develop and grow their careers at Icon and further afield,” said Margie.

“Through the delivery of education and training and the promotion of clear career pathways we can ensure nurses receive meaningful professional development and leadership opportunities to create an effective and motivated workforce that advances the way we deliver care.”

Icon’s Nurse Education and Training team delivers online training modules across our global network and help oversee processes and procedures to maintain consistency and quality of care across day oncology and radiation oncology nursing. In FY2020 the team have delivered 140+ education sessions ensuring our nurses maintain their practical knowledge and continue to upskill.
