Icon Writers / 13 Mar, 2025

After a prominent career and significant contribution to the field of radiation oncology, we bid a heartfelt farewell to A/Prof Kumar Gogna, one of the co-founders of Icon Group, who has made the decision to retire.

Kumar has always been passionate about introducing oncology services to regional and remote areas. It was his vision alongside Mark Middleton, Prof Michael Poulsen and Dr Jonathan Ramsay that brought a vision to life, establishing Radiation Oncology Queensland (ROQ) in 2007 in Toowoomba, Queensland. This centre, now part of our Icon Cancer Centre network formed the foundations of our mission – to deliver the best care possible to as many people as possible, as close to home as possible.

Impact to cancer care

Kumar has held a busy practice at Icon Cancer Centre Greenslopes since its opening and has been a dedicated visiting oncologist at the Radiation Oncology Mater Centre in Brisbane for more than 25 years. Throughout his career, Kumar has held several leadership positions and has led advances in radiation therapy. He is highly experienced in seed implant therapy for the management of early-stage prostate cancer and was instrumental in setting up the first seed brachytherapy program in Queensland. Kumar continues to be a passionate advocate for the use of brachytherapy and increasing access to more people diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Future healthcare

Alongside his clinical achievements, Kumar trained and mentored radiation oncology registrars and was an examiner in pathology for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). He was also a member of the executive board of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology with RANZCR. In 2019, Kumar was recognised for his dedication to training and education earning the RANZCR Denise Lonergan Educational Service Award.

Kumar is widely published and was actively involved in research with a strong focus on exploring treatments for urological cancers.

A proud legacy

Kumar has supported and cared for countless individuals and their families, and his warm and personal approach will be missed by patients and everyone who has had the pleasure of working alongside him.

Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton recognises Kumar’s significant contribution.

“Kumar’s warmth, kindness and deep understanding of cancer care leaves a lasting legacy to not only Icon, but to the field of radiation oncology,” said Mark.

“On a personal level, I will miss his conversations, ideas and friendship. His incredible contribution to patient care and evolutions in treatments represents everything we value at Icon.”

Please join us in thanking Kumar and wishing him all the very best as he embarks on this next chapter, cherishing time with his loved ones as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
