We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr Rick Abraham, who, after a notable career and significant contributions to medical oncology, has made the decision to retire.
Rick has spent his career caring for others and contributing to cancer care in Australia and internationally. At the beginning of his practice, Rick completed a post-graduate clinical research fellowship at the University of Toronto in Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit where he would go on to complete a masters degree in clinical epidemiology studying under doctors who discovered the BRCA gene mutations. He has held public and private positions and maintained a passion for clinical research and training post and undergraduate medical students.
Rick has been instrumental in Icon’s success, helping advocate for more investment in private day oncology and supporting greater access to clinical trials in the private sector.
Beautiful Crazy
After tragically losing his son and nephew to road trauma within a few months of each other, Rick has assisted his brother, Ross and his family with Beautiful Crazy, a charity Ross has founded; dedicated to supporting families with loved ones in ICU. They provide care bags to help ease the burden on thousands of families during their most difficult moments.
To help raise funds with the aim of providing care bags for every ICU in Australia with a trauma service, Ross is currently undertaking The Longest Ride – a 4,300-kilometre 30-day, off-road cycling journey from Perth to Byron Bay. Gravel roads, mud, sand and incessant headwinds. As of today, he has crossed WA and is about to arrive in Uluru. Whilst the initial three weeks are being ridden solo, Rick and some mates will be riding the final week with Ross. For Rick and his brother Ross, this ride not only represents their long personal journey through grief but also a firm commitment to help other families across Australia who find themselves in similar traumatic and distressing situations.
Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton says Rick’s legacy will remain part of Icon’s DNA.
“Rick’s ability to remain committed to his patients while facing personal adversity is truly inspirational,” said Mark.
“I cannot thank Rick enough for everything he has done for Icon, our patients, their families and medical oncology.
“His significant contribution is a hallmark of Icon’s story, and we look forward to cheering him on in this next very personal chapter of his life.”
