Icon Group (Icon) is celebrating the opening of Icon Cancer Centre Herston in Brisbane, home to Queensland’s first privately operated Gamma Knife service.

The centre’s launch marks an important milestone for improving access to worldclass treatment for complex brain, skull base and neurological conditions across the state.

Located within Herston Private Hospital, the centre is the fourth in Australia to offer Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery and is already treating patients with highly precise, advanced non-invasive treatments for a wide range of complex brain, skull base and neurological conditions.

As Icon’s 20th cancer centre in Queensland, Icon Cancer Centre Herston strengthens Icon’s commitment to expanding worldclass treatment options closer to home.

A new era of precision treatment in Queensland

At the heart of the new centre is the Leksell Gamma Knife®, internationally recognised as one of the most accurate technologies for treating complex brain, skull base and neurological conditions using targeted radiation.

The system delivers treatment through 192 finely focused beams of gamma radiation, converging on a point less than onetenth of a millimetre. This allows clinicians to target abnormalities with extraordinary precision while minimising exposure to healthy tissue.

Gamma Knife’s high-precision approach enables faster access to care, fewer side effects, and quicker recovery, helping preserve quality of life and improved patient outcomes.

Leadership driving innovation

Icon Group CEO Mark Middleton said the opening of Icon Cancer Centre Herston reflects Icon’s continued investment in bringing advanced cancer technology to more people across Queensland.

“We are incredibly proud to open Icon Cancer Centre Herston and deliver Queensland’s first privately operated Gamma Knife service,” said Mark.

“This centre represents a major advancement for patients who need access to worldclass, noninvasive brain treatment closer to home.”

Icon Group Deputy Chief Medical Officer, A/Prof Matthew Foote, who led the clinical delivery of the technology, said the centre will make a profound difference for patients’ treatment for brain, skull base and neurological conditions.

“It is exciting to bring Gamma Knife to Icon and provide Queensland patients with more choice and greater access, giving them back more valuable time with their loved ones,” said A/Prof Foote.

Building the future of cancer care

Icon Cancer Centre Herston is the first of two privately operated Icon Gamma Knife centres in Australia, with a second private centre underway at Epworth Richmond in Melbourne, expected to open later this year.

Together, these private centres strengthen Icon’s national precision radiosurgery network, building on the Group’s recent launch of CyberKnife technology.

With both Gamma Knife and CyberKnife now available across its network, Icon is delivering one of Australia’s most comprehensive range of highly targeted treatment options for complex cancers and neurological conditions.
