Icon Cancer Centre at Bali International Hospital marks regional first with advanced radiotherapy cancer treatments

Icon Writers / 26 Mar, 2026

Icon Group marked a major step forward in advancing cancer care across Southeast Asia, launching the first stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) service in Icon Cancer Centre at Bali International Hospital (BIH), in addition to the centre delivering the first brachytherapy patient treatment.

This milestone reflects Icon’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to world-class, integrated cancer care in underserved regions. By leveraging its extensive global network, Icon is able to bring advanced treatment capabilities to more communities.

The new centre is uniquely positioned as the first facility of its kind in the region to be fully supported, operated, and quality-assured by Icon Australia and Singapore, ensuring that clinical protocols, patient safety standards, and operational excellence are benchmarked against Icon’s established international framework.

A regional first

The centre, located within BIH, recently treated its first patient with SRT, through a coordinated effort between Icon’s remote stereotactic support team in Australia, clinical staff in Singapore, and the local Bali team – a truly global collaboration setting a new standard for quality care.

Icon Cancer Centre at BIH is currently the only facility in Bali providing SRT, an advanced form of pinpoint precision radiotherapy used to treat specific tumours with less treatment sessions and reduced side effects. Availability of SRT locally eases travel complexities for patients needing specialised cancer treatments and improves overall outcomes.

Icon’s global Clinical Care team worked closely with Bali clinicians to support the implementation of SRT, providing expertise across training, quality assurance and commissioning.

This successful delivery reflects Icon’s leading stereotactic capabilities and multidisciplinary, borderless approach, which enables the safe, efficient and effective introduction of highly advanced treatments anywhere in the world.

Since receiving SRT treatment, the patient has shown extraordinary progress, regaining the ability to complete activities independently, including walking and talking as she did previously. This improved quality of life demonstrates the invaluable impact of having access to the latest treatments.

Precision-care, closer to home

Building on our advanced technologies, Icon Cancer Centre at BIH has also delivered their first brachytherapy patient treatment, broadening the centre’s capabilities.

A first for the region, brachytherapy is a specialised form of internal radiotherapy where a radioactive source is placed beside or inside a tumour to deliver precise radiation to areas over a period of time.

By delivering these highly advanced cancer therapies, Icon is working to reduce the access inequities to care and ease the burden for patients and their families.

Closing the gap in cancer care

Radiation Oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre at BIH, Dr Daksa Ganapati, recognised the importance of the work being done at the centre.

“The launch of our first SRT service and the successful treatment of our first brachytherapy patient marks a transformative moment for cancer care in this region,” he said.

“By introducing these advanced, high-precision therapies, we are not just upgrading our technology; we are closing the gap in cancer care equity. Indonesian patients can now access world-class treatments right here at home, without the physical and emotional burden of traveling abroad.

“This achievement is a powerful testament to what global collaboration can achieve. By uniting Icon’s international network of clinical expertise with the strong, local platform provided by Bali International Hospital, we are setting a new benchmark for oncology in Indonesia, delivering a truly international standard of safety and precision to the people who need it most.”

Setting a new benchmark

The milestones achieved in Bali forms part of Icon Group’s broader commitment to supporting sustainable cancer care throughout the ASEAN region and globally, which is anchored in collaboration, innovation and clinical excellence.

The maturity of Icon’s systems is accelerating the availability of first-to-market technologies, improving healthcare outcomes for more communities and regions.
