Queensland patients with complex and hard-to-treat cancers will soon have access to one of the world’s most advanced forms of precision radiotherapy, with the introduction of the state’s first CyberKnife® System.

The new 5D Clinics Brisbane centre is part of a joint venture between Icon Group, Australia’s largest dedicated provider of cancer care and 5D Clinics, the nation’s only private provider of CyberKnife treatment.

The service builds on Icon’s continued investment in advanced stereotactic radiotherapy technologies, including Gamma Knife.

5D Clinics Brisbane will be located adjacent to the Icon Cancer Centre Herston Gamma Knife service, which opened in January this year, improving access to precision cancer care closer to home for more Queensland patients.

Cutting-edge cancer technology

The CyberKnife® System, a non-invasive robotic radiosurgery platform, delivers sub-millimetre accuracy with real-time tumour tracking, enabling highly targeted treatment while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The technology is designed to support shorter treatment courses, fewer side effects and faster recovery for patients.

Bringing world-class cancer care closer to home for more patients

“5D Clinics Brisbane is a significant step forward for cancer care in Queensland. We have strong founder roots in Queensland, and this is another example of how integrated, trusted care can bring the absolute latest in world-class cancer treatments to more people,” said Icon Group Chief Executive Officer, Mark Middleton.

The CyberKnife system in Queensland expands the Icon Group and 5D Clinics partnership to three centres nationwide.

“This Brisbane service represents the next phase of our joint venture with Icon, building on the momentum of our clinic in Melbourne and our soon-to-open CyberKnife service in Sydney, continuing our commitment to expanding access to CyberKnife across Australia’s east coast,” said 5D Clinics General Manager, Bruno Bosco.

The new Brisbane service will be supported by experienced multidisciplinary teams, including internationally recognised radiation oncologists, Dr Dominique Lee, A/Prof Matthew Foote, Prof Mark Pinkham, A/Prof Jim Jackson, A/Prof Alex Tan, Dr Mihir Shanker, Dr Andrew Oar, Dr Michael Huo, Dr St.John Newman, Dr Howard Liu, Dr Luke Nicholls, Dr Patrick Morgan and Dr Marcus Hu ensuring patients receive expert care in a specialised, patient-focused environment.

“Having this technology in Brisbane helps ensure more patients can be considered for highly specialised radiotherapy treatment options close to home,” said Icon Cancer Centre Radiation Oncologist, A/Prof Matthew Foote.

“Icon’s growing network of nearby advanced radiotherapy technologies also gives doctors greater flexibility to select the most appropriate treatment pathway for our patients with a focus on delivering the best possible outcomes and experience.”

Located in Bowen Hills, 5D Clinics Brisbane will open in early 2027.
