Prof Sandro Porceddu

Radiation Medicine Research Committee Chair

Prof Porceddu is an internationally recognised radiation oncologist and head and neck cancer specialist. He brings a wealth of experience to his role, having served on leading national and international professional and academic committees, and maintains a strong interest in clinical research and education.

Prof Sandro Porceddu is Board Advisor for Icon Group and a radiation oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre Greenslopes, bringing over 20 years’ experience in the management of head and neck cancer, skin cancer, lymphoma and sarcoma. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Monash University and completed specialist oncology training at Monash Medical Centre and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In 2000, Prof Porceddu became a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) before joining the Princess Alexandra Hospital as a consultant radiation oncologist in 2004. He holds current appointments as Director of Radiation Oncology Research at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland.

Prof Porceddu maintains a strong interest in clinical research and education, actively engaging in medical education and mentorship of research higher degree candidates, medical students, clinical research fellows and allied health professionals. He runs an active clinical and translational research program involving Phase I, II and III trials. He has published over 150 clinical research articles in leading publications such as Lancet Oncology and Journal of Clinical Oncology, and is a regular invited speaker at national and international conferences including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) meetings. Prof Porceddu was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine for his research into improving the integration of radiation therapy in the management of head and neck cancer. He was also a recipient of the American Head and Neck Society Christopher O’Brien Traveling Scholarship.

Prof Porceddu has served on leading national and international, professional and academic committees including the board of Cancer Council Australia, International Union for the Control of Cancer (UICC) Expert Advisory Panel and the National Cancer Expert Reference Group for the Commonwealth. He has previously held appointments as president of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) and of the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG). Prof Porceddu is the current Chair of the Cancer Alliance Queensland Head and Neck Committee and Deputy Chair of the Head and Neck Cancer International Group.
