Modular bunker technology accelerating cancer care

Icon Group is setting the standard in world-leading radiation oncology design, using modular technology to accelerate and allow for the construction of cancer centres in over-developed cities and communities in regional Australia.

This feat of engineering provides an innovative solution to densely populated urban and metropolitan areas where there is often minimal real estate to construct radiation therapy bunkers which traditionally require significant space. The Icon Cancer Centre on the Norwest Private Hospital campus was purpose-built with this technology to fit the space available and support the rapidly growing Greater Sydney population, set to reach 6.6 million by 2036.

Equally, the highly portable and sealable design, provided an effective solution to the procurement and construction barriers faced by regional New South Wales during ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns, allowing construction to continue off site and on track for Icon’s cancer centres in Maitland and Mildura.

“At Icon, we have and will always push the boundaries of innovation to bring care to communities who need it most. From providing the latest in radiation therapy technology with Australia’s first Halcyon, HyperArc and IDENTIFY systems to pioneering modular radiation bunker technology that enables us to accelerate the delivery of cancer care into underserved communities where there are space and logistical barriers,” Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton said.

Hutchinson Builders Director, Russell Fryer says Hutchinsons is delighted to work hand-in-hand with Icon to bring this world-leading technology to New South Wales.

“The innovative modular facility is an absolute feat of engineering which reduces difficulties surrounding size constraints – Hutchies Modular is a leader in this space. For hospitals and centres that don’t have the room to fit a traditional radiation bunker or ability to undergo significant construction works, this is a fantastic solution for the local community which we are proud to play a role in offering at Icon’s cancer centres,” Mr Fryer said.

This innovative modular technology enables Icon to deliver a resilient approach to construction and efficiently bring care closer to home where and when it is needed.
