As a country boy who grew up in a small town in regional Victoria, Ben Archard knows what it’s like to have limited access to vital healthcare services. That’s why the 29-year-old is so passionate about delivering healthcare services – especially cancer care – in local communities.

Ben was recently appointed as the Site Manager of Icon Cancer Centre Noosa, which will open its doors this month. The new centre – Icon’s 39th in Australia – will offer the most cutting-edge radiation therapy techniques and technology available to deliver faster and more accurate treatment options for cancer patients in Noosa and surrounding regions.

On purpose – a passion for patient care

Ben has been with Icon for more than 10 years. In 2014, he started at Icon Cancer Centre Richmond and Freemasons in Melbourne as a casual Administration Officer while studying business, majoring in accounting.

“I’ve always had a passion for developing process that drives improvements in patient care,” said Ben.

“I’ve worked on multiple major projects at Icon that have made a considerable impact in the standardisation of administration processes for our sites across Australia.”

Ben believes he was always destined for a career in healthcare with a nurturing mum who began her career as a radiographer and is now CEO of a public health service in Victoria.

“Watching her career develop was inspiring and showed me how rewarding it is to be a part of a health service that helps people in their time of need,” said Ben.

“Cancer care is the epitome of that, so I feel privileged to lead a team of professionals that support patients and their families in such a positive way.”

Opportunity at hand

Ben admits his path to becoming a Site Manager was uncoventional. He hopes it will inspire others to follow in his footsteps.

“I see myself as a role model for people in the adminstration space of the business. I’ve taken an inconventional pathway to this role, and I hope I’ll be able to inspire others to push themselves to get wherever they want to go within the company and beyond,” said Ben.

Ben says his new role has thrown him some unique challenges but he’s tackling them head on.

“This role is multi-faceted, which I love, but it does come with challenges,” explained Ben.

“I’m not from a clinical background, so managing a team of mostly clinical staff has its difficulties but I’ve been asking lots of questions and learning from the experts in each discipline.

“I’m very appreciative of the work the team do each day and have a great team around me and I’m very thankful of that.”

A change of scenery

In 2023, Ben made the move from Victoria to Queensland – and he hasn’t looked back.

“Moving to Queensland was the best move of my life,” said Ben.

“I love the Noosa region and the people who live here, so to be able to give back to the community through Icon is something I’m proud of.”

Ben looks forward to bringing the best possible care to the region.

“I hope to deliver the best health outcomes to patients in the Noosa community and each decision we make as a team will be focussed on that goal,” he explained.

“I’m also focussed on being a supportive leader for the Noosa team – If our team members are happy in their roles and in themselves at work, it will only benefit the patients who walk through our doors each day.”

Connection at heart

Since moving to Noosa, Ben is heavily involved in the local community, particularly the Noosa Tigers Football Club as a player and coach of their Colts program.

With an impressive footy resume, Ben is now helping other talented footballers.

“I’ve been lucky to be involved in some high-level playing programs in Victoria from state level under 18s to five years on VFL lists, finishing up at the Essendon Football Club on their AFL COVID top-up list while in their VFL program,” says Ben.

“The Noosa Football Club is a genuine pathway for young talent to progress as footballers and people without having to move to Brisbane or interstate to get where they want to go.”

When talking to Ben, it’s clear his community’s best interests at the heart of everything he does.

“Thanks to Icon Cancer Centre, cancer patients in the community will have this service on their doorstep and also won’t have to travel for their cancer care, which is something this community deserves.”
