Richard Grainger, the Director of Pharmacy at Slade Pharmacy Murdoch in Western Australia (WA), exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose — showing up every day with a passion and deep commitment to his patients and team.

Affectionately nicknamed Captain America (for his exceptional leadership and problem-solving), Richard continues to leave a lasting mark throughout his 16 plus year career with Slade Pharmacy.

A unique beginning

Richard began his pharmacy story at just 14 years old sweeping floors and stacking shelves at his local pharmacy. Even then, he felt a strong pull toward the profession.

After a brief foray into sales, Richard found his way back into pharmacy, completing his Bachelor of Pharmacy and never looked back.

Building experience

Richard’s Slade journey began as an intern at Slade Pharmacy Murdoch (formerly APHS Murdoch). It wasn’t long before he became the site’s first junior oncology pharmacist helping to build the foundations of Murdoch’s pharmacy oncology services.

“It was a big learning curve,” Richard explained.

“Oncology was new to Murdoch, and we had to collaborate with other hospitals to set up the unit. But those experiences were pivotal and shaped the way I work today.”

Richard went on to become an oncology pharmacist at Murdoch, and after three years moved into the role of Oncology Team Lead at Epic Pharmacy Hollywood (now Slade Pharmacy Hollywood), before returning to Murdoch again in 2020 to lead the site as Director of Pharmacy.

He credits much of his professional growth to key mentors across Slade including: John Forster, Andrew Wells, Russell Hill, and Cherrie Leong.

“I’ve learned so much from these leaders— skills and values that shape the leader I am today.”

Leadership lessons

For Richard, great leadership means building a strong, diverse team and constantly reflecting on your leadership approach.

“As a leader, you must surround yourself with people who challenge you and complement your skills,” he said.

“And take time to reflect on what has worked and what hasn’t but don’t be too hard on yourself.”

Leading his team through the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced these leadership qualities.

“You had to be adaptable, communicate often and be a stable presence and these qualities remain important.”

Innovation in healthcare

Richard is passionate about shaping the future of pharmacy through innovation and people, committing himself to nurturing the next generation of pharmacy professionals.

By pioneering new electronic health record systems, Richard was able to improve pharmacy processes, reduce delivery times and enhance patient care at both Murdoch and Slade Pharmacy Richmond in Melbourne, Victoria.

He also serves as WA Chair of Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha), contributes to steering committees at University of WA and Curtin University, and regularly guest lectures, sharing his expertise with future pharmacists and business professionals.

“I find real joy in mentoring students and interns. Watching them grow and succeed is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job,” he shared.

Leading by example

Richard’s leadership philosophy is grounded in learning, reflection, and authenticity – and he encourages others to take on a similar approach.

His willingness to travel across Australia twice in six months to support the Richmond team is a testament to his commitment to help and nurture others.

“No one’s a leadership master, I believe we’re all students. Be reliable and open. Reflect, but don’t dwell. And don’t wait for a title, lead by how you show up every day.”

His hands-on approach to refining processes has left a lasting impact on both sites, setting a high standard for exceptional care that is built from strong, genuine relationships.
