As Clinical Lead Radiation Therapist at Bowen Icon Cancer Centre, Dean Paterson is at the forefront of delivering world-class radiotherapy care to patients in Wellington, New Zealand.

Named Icon Group’s 2024 Iconic Awards Innovate Winner, Dean is known for his innovation, empathy and relentless drive for continuous improvement, qualities transforming outcomes for patients and shaping the future of cancer care.

Growing a career through innovation

Dean’s journey began with a spark of curiosity in high school, a curiosity that continues to define his career. With a commitment to continuous improvement, he has embraced new technologies and refined workflows to make treatment safer, faster, and more patient-centred.

“Getting to make those small, constant improvements for my patients and colleagues keeps me passionate about radiation therapy,” Dean said.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to help patients receive the best care possible while ensuring other RTs (radiation therapists) have enjoyable and fulfilling careers.”

Research has played a pivotal role in Dean’s path. Starting with an Honours project on skin care during radiation treatment, his work opened doors to international opportunities and now sees him serving as Associate Editor for the Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences.

“I love the practical side of research and shaping the future of cancer care,” he shared

Dean has been part of shaping the future of cancer care, working as a Brachytherapy Supervisor at Wellington Hospital and leading the first team in Australasia to enable radiation therapists to perform applicator insertions. In the role, Dean also organised a National Brachytherapy Workshop, oversaw afterloader replacement, and introduced new brachytherapy techniques.

“This role really shaped the RT I am today, driven to innovate.”

Combining innovation and patient care

From moving away from radiation tattoos to exploring AI and flash radiotherapy, Dean is energised by the rapid evolution of technology in radiotherapy.

“One of the most exciting things about this job is how much the role continues to evolve,” he said.

“We’re already seeing great clinical benefits of AI planning tools and exploring how to improve on them and understand how AI can further make our processes safe and more efficient.”

But for Dean, technology isn’t his only passion.

“The best part of new technology is that it allows us to focus on what matters most, patient care.”

He recalls a patient who, after weeks of dreading treatment, didn’t want to leave on their last day, because they would miss the team’s support.

“As healthcare providers, we make such a big impact on patients’ lives. Sometimes we’re their only support. That connection is so important, and a very special part of the job.”

Dean’s advice for other radiation therapists?

“Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Don’t avoid things just because they’re unfamiliar, embrace the challenge because there’s always support around you.”
