Icon Doctor Day 2025: the future of cancer care

This year’s Icon Australia and New Zealand Doctor Day saw over 90 of Icon’s leading specialists come together to share impactful knowledge.

Held on Saturday 15 November, the annual event provides an opportunity for our doctors to hear from one another as well as Icon’s executive leadership and board members, share knowledge and explore the future of cancer care. 

 

Session one highlights – state of the nation 

The first session began after a warm opening by Icon Group Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ian Irving, which was followed by Icon Group Chairman, Paul McClintock AO, who delivered an insightful reflection on what lies ahead for private healthcare. 

Icon Group CEO, Mark Middleton OAM, delivered an integral update for the future of the organisation and his global vision. Looking ahead, Mark highlighted Icon’s expansion of international operations by accelerating services in the UK and establishing a strong market position. He also indicated the importance of how Icon is transforming healthcare, with new technology in compounding, radiotherapy and digital oncology, before closing out with an acknowledgement of our clinicians noting the stability of our network and recognising new doctors who continue to join Icon. Attendees then heard from Icon Group investors, EQT’s Hugo Visscher for a short business update.  

Icon Cancer Centre Australia and New Zealand CEO, Paul Fenton provided an insightful presentation of Icon’s future-ready cancer care, with an emphasis on performing with purpose and how our doctors lead the way in delivering exceptional care.  

This year the event was also attended by our Icon Cancer Centre Singapore Medical Director, Dr Karmen Wong. Dr Wong discussed the positive impact that Icon is making in ASEAN and shared regional insights noting similarities and differences between healthcare systems. She finished by sharing insights into our newest centre in Indonesia.  

Closing out the morning session was an executive panel Q&A, chaired by Dr Ian Irving, featuring Mark Middleton OAM, Paul McClintock AO, Paul Fenton and Dr Karmen Wong which provided an opportunity for doctors to ask questions on healthcare concerns, strategy and direction.  

Session two highlights – the future of care 

The afternoon session was chaired by Icon Group Director of Medical Oncology (AU/NZ), A/Prof Louise Nott and looked further into the clinical innovations of healthcare. 

Partner and event sponsor at Avant Law, Ben Ryan discussed considerations and implications of AI within the medico-legal space and how it can be used to maximise efficiency. 

Radiation Oncologist, Dr Paul Conway reflected on the important strides of CyberKnife, and its role in the future of cancer care.  

Icon Group Clinical Director, Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Oncology (Asia Pacific), Dr Nat Lenzo explored the significance of theranostics and how it is helping to detect and treat cancers more efficiently. 

Group Director of Research (Medical Oncology and Haematology) Dr Craig Gedye provided powerful insights into current medical oncology research, and what is on the horizon.

The second session was closed out by Radiation Oncologist A/Prof Peter Gorayski who captured the significance of low-dose radiotherapy for benign conditions. 

Session three highlights – culture and connection in healthcare 

The third session chaired by Icon Group Deputy Chief Medical Officer, A/Prof Matthew Foote focused on the importance of well-being in healthcare. The session began with guest speaker, Queensland Health Chief Health Officer, A/Prof Catherine McDougall, who shared strategies and insights for building a healthier medical workforce. 

This was complemented by Business Coach and Founder of Passion institute, Shivani Gupta, who provided a comprehensive overview of how passion and discipline keep physicians well physically and mentally. 

Radiation Oncologist, Dr Dominique Lee shared key insights from Icon’s “Beyond Resilience” Physician Wellbeing Program conducted alongside Shivani and also shared her powerful personal story of mental health and why she continues to drive forward change in the medical profession.  

To close out the day, there was a panel discussion featuring Dr Dominique Lee, A/Prof Catherine McDougall, Ms Shivani Gupta, A/Prof Peter Gorayski and Dr Dominic Lunn, where they discussed the role of connection and the importance of clinician wellbeing.

Dr Ian Irving commended the event’s success, and Icon’s strong network of clinicians that continue to inspire and nurture those around them.
