Our nurses. Our future: celebrating the leaders shaping cancer care at Icon

Icon Writers / 12 May, 2026

On International Nurses Day 2026, Icon Group proudly celebrates the 475 nurses across our global network who make exceptional cancer care possible every day.

From direct patient care to education, leadership and advocacy, Icon nurses play a critical role not only in how care is delivered, but in how cancer services continue to evolve for the future.

This year’s International Nurses Day theme Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives reflects a truth we see across Icon every day: when nurses are supported, empowered and given opportunities to grow, patient care is stronger, safer and more compassionate.

Nurses as leaders, educators and advocates

At Icon, nursing is not just a profession at the bedside. Our nurses are leaders who guide multidisciplinary teams, educators who support patients and colleagues, and advocates who champion quality, safety and access to care.

Across our centres and services in Australia, New Zealand, ASEAN and the UK, nurses help shape clinical practice, mentor future talent and drive innovation within cancer care. Their expertise supports patients at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, while also strengthening the resilience, sustainability and innovation of healthcare systems.

Celebrating nurses across our global network

To mark International Nurses Day at Icon, our teams around the world are sharing stories that highlight the breadth and impact of nursing roles across our business. From specialist oncology nursing, cancer care coordination and education to pharmacy, at home care and clinical support services.

For Hayley Fynan, Clinic and Homecare Nurse at Pharmaxo Healthcare, nursing is about connection, impact and team support.

“Being part of a supportive team, whilst delivering personalised, high-quality care and truly making a real difference to patients every day — this makes me proud to be a nurse,” Hayley said.

Lead Cancer Nurse at Icon Cancer Centre London, Michelle Swan, recognised the impact that nursing has had on her life.

“Nursing gives me a deep sense of purpose. It’s where caring, connection, and trust come together,” Michelle said.

These stories showcase the diversity, depth and dedication of our nursing workforce and reinforce the fundamental contribution nurses make to cancer care globally.

Group Director of Nursing, Margie Hjorth said International Nurses Day provides a moment to recognise our nurses.

“Nurses are at the heart of cancer care,” said Margie.

“They are not only delivering highly specialised, compassionate care every day, they are leading teams, educating patients and colleagues, and helping shape how cancer services evolve for the future.

“Nurturing our nursing workforce means creating environments where nurses are supported, valued and empowered to grow.

“When we invest in our nurses, their development, leadership and wellbeing – we strengthen our teams, the sustainability of cancer care and most importantly deliver the best care possible to our patients and their families.

At Icon, we’re proud to support nurses to build meaningful, long-term careers and to play an active role in shaping the future of cancer care, locally and globally.”

Empowering meaningful careers, not just roles

Icon is committed to ensuring nursing at Icon is more than a job, it is a career with purpose, progression and unique opportunity.

Through structured development pathways, leadership programs and global connection, we invest in our nursing workforce so people can build long, fulfilling careers and Icon and beyond while continuing to deliver the highest standards of care.

Initiatives such as nursing career pathway, specialist training programs, scholarships and leadership forums reflect our belief that empowering nurses benefits not only individuals, but patients, teams and communities.

Looking ahead

As healthcare continues to change, nurses are central to how care is delivered and experienced. At Icon, we remain committed to supporting nurses to lead, to learn and to advocate for their patients, their profession and the future of cancer care.
