Driving excellence and impact

CAREERS AT ICON: Explore opportunities with Icon Group Click here to take the next step in your cancer care career

As Icon Group’s 2025 Middleton Scholar, Annie Nguyen exemplifies the impact a nursing career can have beyond the bedside.

From clinician to leader, innovator and educator, Annie’s work is improving care for patients and strengthening teams across the region.

To mark International Nurses Day, Annie shared her insights from a nursing career shaped by opportunity, support and a commitment to continuous improvement.

An impactful career built with support

After moving from Vietnam to study nursing in Singapore, Annie started her career as a registered nurse at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. In 2018, Annie joined Icon as a staff nurse, marking a transition into oncology nursing.

Since then, Annie has continued to expand her impact, completing a Master of Business Administration and Postgraduate Certificate in Oncology, and stepping into roles focused on Clinical Quality and Governance.

Annie said her growth was made possible through the support of people along the way.

“Icon has been very supportive, providing me with opportunities to learn and grow,” Annie said.

“While there have been challenges, the encouragement around me has made each step of the journey easier.

My leader, An Chau, has been a constant source of guidance and patience, and the recognition from doctors and patients continues to motivate me to do better every day.”

Global care through quality and education

In late 2025, Annie was appointed ASEAN Regional Manager for Clinical Quality and Governance, marking the next chapter of a career focused on improving patient safety and strengthening education across the network.

In this role, Annie leads quality improvement initiatives, manages clinical risk, oversees audits, standardises best practice with multidisciplinary teams, and delivers education and training to enhance patient safety and clinical excellence.

Annie is particularly passionate about strengthening audit and compliance processes to support transparency, accountability and continuous improvement.

Her work makes a difference.

“This role allows us to strengthen consistency in clinical practice, so patients receive the same high standard of care regardless of location,” Annie said.

“We’re already seeing measurable improvements in patient safety and treatment outcomes.

“I’m excited to help align care standards across diverse healthcare systems and share best practices that improve the patient experience across the region.”

A Middleton Scholarship winner – deepening capability

In recognition of this impact, Annie was named Icon Group’s 2025 Middleton Scholar, a scholarship designed around professional interests in nurse education and empowering our ASEAN teams.

Through the scholarship, Annie will continue to build her healthcare leadership capability, as well as spending time with Icon teams across Queensland and Western Australia to learn, share insights and exchange best practice.

Annie will also present an abstract at the Cancer Nurses Society Annual Congress on Advocating for culturally sensitive psychological assessment in ASEAN cancer care: our role as nurses.

Annie is keen to harness the scholarship to its full potential.

“Through the scholarship, I hope to contribute to regional education programs that support onboarding, develop leadership capability and strengthen nursing teams across our ASEAN regions,” Annie said.

“Nursing is such a dynamic field, and learning from different teams and sites will help bring new ideas back to support patient care across ASEAN.”

We look forward to seeing the impact Annie will make through the scholarship and beyond.

A career of care and opportunity

Annie’s story reflects the farreaching impact a nursing career can have especially when nurses are supported to grow, learn and lead.

At Icon, we’re committed to supporting nurses to build long, fulfilling careers where they can make their greatest impact for patients, teams and communities.

One of the ways we do this is through our Nursing Career Pathways Program, a program designed to support development, progression and provide more opportunities for our nurses. This program is planned to roll out across our global teams, ensuring all nurses have access to consistent support and clear pathways to grow and thrive.
