Site Manager at Icon Cancer Centre The Bays, Khaled Azar knows first-hand the devastating impact of cancer. His personal story is what drives him to make a difference to more people.

A son’s love

After his family migrated from Afghanistan to Australia in the 1990s, Khaled’s beloved father was diagnosed with bowel cancer. This experience paved the way for Khaled’s career in cancer care.

“My father was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer shortly after we migrated to Australia and he sadly passed away at a young age,” recalls Khaled.

“During his cancer journey, I was his full-time carer, which deeply shaped my desire to make a difference in cancer care.

“Helping cancer patients navigate their treatment journey and ensuring their experience is as seamless and positive as possible is the most rewarding aspect of my role.”

Dedicated to exceptional care

Khaled, who has a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) and a Masters in Radiation Therapy, joined Icon in June 2018 as Clinical Lead Radiation Therapist at Icon Cancer Centre Cairns.

Since then, Khaled has gone on to manage four Icon Cancer Centre sites across Australia, standing him in good stead to lead the brand-new Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

Khaled started his Site Manager journey at the start of 2020 when he made the move from Cairns to Mackay to take on the Site Manager role at Icon Cancer Centre Mackay.

Having grown up in Victoria, Khaled relocated his family back to Melbourne in 2021, where he was appointed Site Manager at Icon Cancer Centre Mulgrave.

Opportunity at hand

In June 2023, he stepped into the Site Manager role at Icon Cancer Centre Richmond and Freemasons, before making the move to Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays in late-2024.

Always up for a challenge, Khaled says the experiences he has had during his career at Icon have helped to shape him as a leader.

“At Icon, I’ve been able to embrace opportunities that have allowed me to grow and evolve into a stronger, more effective leader,” says Khaled.

“By regularly challenging myself, I’ve been able to better support my teams in delivering exceptional care to cancer patients in our communities.”

Khaled says his career highlights to date include successfully leading Icon Mackay during the pandemic, along with managing large and complex sites in Melbourne.

He is now ready to take on his next challenge at Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays, which is a full circle opportunity for Khaled.

Community at heart

“I grew up in Frankston and attended Mount Eliza Secondary College. During my university years, I worked multiple part-time jobs in Mornington and its surrounding suburbs. I met incredible people who supported me and my family through our hardest times,” says Khaled.

“Now feels like the right time to give back to the community that gave us so much. I love Mornington’s strong sense of community and togetherness. Its people are genuinely kind and caring, and I’m excited to contribute to their wellbeing through this role.”

Through the partnership between Icon Cancer Centre and The Bays Hospital, local cancer patients are now able to access all aspects of their care in one location.

Fostering the future of healthcare

The service is led by highly experienced and well-regarded local radiation oncologists, Dr David Blakey and Dr Maree Sexton. Patients have access to world-class treatment options including stereotactic radiation therapy, tattoo-less radiation therapy for breast cancer patients, along with HyperArc for patients with secondary brain tumours.

A dedicated radiation therapy planning CT scanner is also available onsite, meaning patients can have their planning sessions and treatment all in one location.

“This new centre will provide local cancer patients access to the most advanced radiotherapy technology, ensuring they receive cutting-edge treatment without needing to travel far,” says Khaled.

“They will be treated by an exceptional team of professionals who are not only experts in their field but also incredibly kind, caring and hardworking.”

Work-life balance

Outside of work, Khaled likes to stay active by running, walking and going to the gym.

“I also enjoy playing soccer, which helps me unwind and stay engaged,” says Khaled.

“Above all, I cherish spending time with my family and three children, as they are my biggest source of joy and support.”

Khaled is excited for the next chapter in his career at Icon and believes what truly sets Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays apart from nearby services is the strength of the team.

“We’ve brought together a group of highly skilled, experienced and compassionate experts who are deeply invested in our patient’s care and passionate about making a difference in the local community,” says Khaled.

“Many of our team members are from the area, so they have deep connections and understanding. We’re also incredibly grateful to be working alongside The Bays Hospital, which has been outstanding in its collaboration with us.

“Together, we are committed to providing the highest quality care, infused with hope and compassion, to the Mornington community and surrounds.”
