From the moment Trudi Spencer first stepped into a pharmacy, more than 35 years ago, she knew she was home. Drawn to the impact she could make, and the rewarding career opportunities Trudi has spent her career helping others.

Today, as she celebrates 25 years of service with Slade Pharmacy, Trudi stands as an example of the passion and dedication that has shaped 60 years of Slade.

Building a fulfilling pharmacy career

Trudi’s journey began in 1989, working in a pharmacy in country Victoria. It was there she discovered the role of a pharmacy technician, a role she hadn’t even heard of.

“I was intrigued, so I jumped in, completed my qualifications, and that’s where my career in dispensing and as a technician started,” she recalled.

In 2000, Trudi moved to Queensland and began a remarkable 25-year journey with Slade, starting as the non-pharmacist Dispensary Manager at APHS St Andrew’s, now known as Slade Pharmacy St Andrew’s.

“I loved my time there – the people, the work, even the challenges,” she said.

“It was a great introduction to an organisation I would spend a big chunk of my career with.”

After that, Trudi took on various roles including solo technician, dispensary manager, aged care services, and customer service, each one deepening her expertise and shaping her career. Today, she’s the solo technician at Slade Pharmacy North Lakes, based within the Icon Cancer Centre in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

“I love my current role – it’s a great team and I’ve been able to shape the role to deliver the best care I can,” she expressed.

A career of impact

Trudi hasn’t just worked in our pharmacies; she’s helped build them.

Over the years, she’s contributed to contract wins, helped open new sites, piloted new roles, and even helped shape some uniform designs.

“It’s so exciting being there from the beginning sometimes literally, when there’s no roof or walls yet,” she laughed.

“Being a ‘test dummy’ for new roles and seeing it grow into permanent parts of the network, and it’s all work I’m really proud of.”

A career defined by people

As the pharmacy field and our network has evolved including the introduction of new technologies, systems, and the harmonisation of the Slade Pharmacy brand, Trudi says one thing has always stayed the same: the people.

“Without a doubt, the biggest highlight of my career is the people I’ve met,” she shared.

“I’ve made lifelong friendships and been part of so many amazing teams.”

Having worked across nine different sites, she loves the small-world nature of pharmacy and the passion of the teams.

“You cross paths again and again. It’s one of the best parts of the job,” she said.

“I’m especially grateful for the teams I work with and the pharmacists who champion the role of a technician and have allowed me to flourish.”

Words of wisdom

With more than 35 years in pharmacy under her belt, Trudi has plenty of advice for those just starting out.

“Say yes to opportunities; trust your instincts; and explore every corner of pharmacy,” she shared.

“Never stop learning, ask questions and take notes.

“And most importantly have fun. There will be tough days but enjoy the journey. Take time for yourself. Travel. Explore. Life outside work matters just as much.”
