A/Prof Paul Vasey’s medical journey began in Scotland in 1988. His early career saw him involved in pivotal clinical and laboratory research, notably his MD thesis on ‘Invitro Studies of Cisplatin-resistant Human Ovarian Carcinoma Cells’.

His commitment to cancer research led him to the esteemed Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow and later to the directorship of the West of Scotland Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) which, under his leadership, won Cancer Research UK’s prestigious Alpha* award.

2004 marked a new chapter for A/Prof Vasey when he moved his young family to Brisbane, Australia, accepting the role of staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Two years later, A/Prof Vasey entered private practice with Icon and he is currently a visiting medical oncologist at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, and also consults weekly at St Andrew’s Private Hospital in Ipswich.

As the first author of the ESMO guidelines for the treatment of ovarian cancer and with over 200 publications under his belt, his contribution to cancer care globally is undeniable.

In the interview, A/Prof Vasey speaks candidly about how his patients inspire him.
