In this episode of Icon Elevate, Group CEO Mark Middleton OAM sits down with Dr Ian Irving, Icon’s Group Medical Director. Dr Ian Irving has been with Icon since its beginnings and shares his thoughts on Icon’s growth over the last decade, career journey and work/life balance.

Graduating from the University of Queensland in 1991 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, he became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2000 and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2001.

Dr Irving has had an impressive career, previously serving as Director of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Townsville Hospital and Clinical Director of the Institute of Cancer. During that time, he was responsible for consolidating and expanding tertiary-level cancer care in North Queensland.

His expertise covers a broad range of haematological disorders, including bone marrow transplantation, acute leukaemia, lymphoma, obstetric haematology, general haematology, disorders of iron metabolism and laboratory haematology.

Dr Irving has sat on national and international committees and advisory boards, focusing on haematological disorders such as chronic myeloid leukaemia, myelofibrosis, myelodysplasia, lymphoma and bone marrow transplantation. He is a strong advocate for clinical trial research, participating in phase I/II and III multicentre clinical trials.

In addition to his clinical skills, Dr Irving is a phenomenal leader, having performed senior administrative roles in haematology and cancer. He currently consults at Icon Cancer Centre Wesley and is Medical Director of Icon Group.
