Nurturing future nurses

Icon Writers / 09 Jan, 2024

Introduced in 2023, Icon’s Graduate Nurse Program is designed to help shape the careers of the next generation of cancer care health professionals.

The program helps support the development of nurses wanting to immerse themselves in an oncology nursing career and ‘grow their own’ career with Icon.

Graduate nurses enrolled in the program undergo 12-months of intensive training in medical oncology, haematology and radiation oncology and are trained by experienced teams across Icon’s extensive network of cancer centres in Australia.

The syllabus includes theoretical and practice fundamentals designed to advance clinical knowledge and skills and offer comprehensive training and development opportunities that provide the foundations for an exceptional oncology nurse.

Through the program, our graduates:

  • Take part in interactive theoretical lessons with your peers.
  • Learn on-the-ground in one of our cancer centres, with experienced nurses and doctors to guide you.
  • Undertake a four-week rotation in radiation oncology.
  • Receive ongoing support and mentorship.

Best care possible

Icon Group Director of Nursing, Margie Hjorth says this program elevates the future of oncology nursing.
“This program focuses on evidence-based teaching and a comprehensive approach to the complexities of oncology to nurture the next generation of nurses,” says Margie.

“Nurses are at the forefront of healthcare, and this program is designed to nurture their curiosity and elevate the profession to ensure patients now and into the future receive the best possible care by confident, skilled and caring hands.”

Each of the inaugural cohort are staying on with Icon to start their nursing careers and all have valued their year of learning. Here’s what some of our 2023 Graduate Nurses have to say about the program:

“As the only Grad Nurse at my site I was given ample guidance and individualised support to help wrap my head around the complexities of oncology nursing. This helped build my overall confidence in my skills and knowledge, which I do not believe I would have gotten elsewhere.”

Annie Kennelly, Graduate Nurse, Icon Cancer Centre Wesley

“Icon’s Nursing Graduate Program has provided a supportive learning environment to meet my professional development needs in becoming a cancer nurse post-graduation. I have enjoyed every moment with Icon, and everyone is there to help and guide you along the way. Icon’s Graduate Nurse Program is amazing, and I highly recommend applying.”

– Angela Barlow, Graduate Nurse, Icon Cancer Centre South Brisbane
