Icon Singapore holds inaugural Regional Oncology Conference

Experts share a multidisciplinary approach to the future of cancer care

Icon Singapore has brought together medical leaders from across Southeast Asia to share and discuss the latest advancement and breakthroughs in cancer research, treatment and care.

The event, 27-28 Janary, was Icon’s first in the region and included doctors and partners from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, and Vietnam.

The delegates focused on address the cancer care gap through a multidisciplinary approach to care across specialities and boundaries.

Putting science into practice

Radiation Oncologist and Icon’s Deputy Director Radiation Oncology, A/Prof Matthew Foote discussed the changing management of metastatic brain cancer with stereotactic ablative therapy. A/Prof Foote shared insights into the use of cutting-edge radiation therapy technology and how clinicians and technology are turning the dial on patient outcomes.

Keynote international speaker, Prof Peter Fasching discussed the latest in breast cancer treatment including statistical modelling and genomics and Dr Lee Guek Eng spoke on individualised care for young women diagnosed with cancer.

Updates in the management of urogenital cancers by Dr Shang Yeap and Dr Patricia Kho discussed the evolving landscape for lung cancer treatment. Adj A/Prof Kong Hwai Loong discussed new drug conjugates (ADCs) as the next wave in oncology and case study discussions were presented by Singapore Medical Director, Dr Karmen Wong and Oncologist, Dr Robert Lim highlighting open collaboration.

Future healthcare

There was a focus on pushing the boundaries of cancer care through investment in research and clinical trials.

Icon Group’s Executive Manager of Research, Sophie Mepham shared Icon’s clinical trial capabilities with a focus on global networking to deliver a robust, quality clinical trials program benefitting clinicians and patients. Similarly, Icon Singapore Research Committee Chair and Senior Consultant, Dr Hsieh Wen-Son shared the next steps in clinical trials from a clinician’s perspective and the importance of introducing research into clinical practice for the best possible patient care.

Attendees were also excited to hear more on the future of theranostics by Icon Group’s Director of Molecular Oncology, Julie Crouch who discussed precision medicine and its capabilities for improving cancer outcomes through hyper-personalised treatments.

Ending on a high note, the Meet the Expert session provided an opportunity for doctors to share unique cancer cases with a focus on multidisciplinary care to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

Elevating care

Icon CEO, ASEAN and Hong Kong, Serena Wee said the event reflects a growing commitment to elevating care in the region.

“This conference served as a platform for us to bridge the cancer gap in our region and focus on a multidisciplinary approach for cross-boundary cancer care,” said Serena.
