Icon Group continues partnership with, Rotary, ARPANSA, and humanitarian group HUG, sending vital radiotherapy equipment from Australia to Ukraine, supporting access to cancer treatment.

The joint effort is actively assisting frontline Ukrainian health workers to continue their lifesaving work in conflict-affected areas.

Working with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), Icon was the first to respond to HUG’s (Help Ukraine Group) donation request.

Icon provided various radiation measurement apparatus which are critical for quality assurance and precise radiation delivery. Leading independent supplier of radiation oncology equipment, alphaXRT also contributed to the donations with ex-display equipment along with ARPANSA sending calibration equipment.

Facilitated by internal service organisation, Rotary, the equipment arrived in Poland in before being transported by road to Ukraine cancer centres.

The PTW Octavius arrived safely and is now operational at Tomoclinic in Kropyvnytskyi, supporting patient specific quality assurance and accurate radiation dosing, critical for delivering safe radiotherapy treatment.

President of HUG and Clinical Professor at Stanford School of Medicine, Nataliya Kovalchuk extends her thanks to all involved.

“A heartfelt thank you to Dr Natalka Suchowerska for spearheading the vital equipment donations for radiation oncology in Ukraine and to Icon Group and their medical physics team for their generous contribution of essential equipment,” said Nataliya.

Medical Physicist and proud supporter of HUG, A/Prof Natalka Suchowerska echoes this sentiment.

“Despite the miles between us, human dignity, quality of life and care for our patients resonate deeply with Ukrainians and Australia and we deeply appreciate the support from the Australian radiation oncology community during these challenging times,” Said Natalka.

This initiative highlights Icon’s commitment to integrating sustainable practices throughout our operations and caring for our people, planet, and patients.

Icon Group Director of Medical Physics, Anthony Walsh reflected on the teams’ efforts.

“We’ve been supporting our colleagues in the Ukraine for many months now, remotely connecting on clinical training and sharing ideas, it’s been so rewarding for our clinical teams,” said Anthony.

This latest collaboration from Australia’s medical physics community is truly inspiring, reflecting our shared commitment to supporting peers and cancer patients in need.”

In an effort to reduce Icon’s carbon footprint and medical waste, the donated cancer treatment equipment will support those in affected areas, whilst minimising environmental impacts.

The equipment will assist in providing quality care for patients, improving work environments for people and delivering better care to more people, closer to home.
