Kōrero mō te tūranga, About the Role:
As a Health Care Assistant, you'll be an important part of our multidisciplinary team, supporting patients throughout their cancer treatment journey. Working under the guidance of our nursing team, you'll help create a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment while contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care.
This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same. You'll have the opportunity to build meaningful connections with patients and families while supporting the clinical team to deliver exceptional care. This is a permanent full-time opportunity and reports to the Nurse Manager.
What You'll Be Doing
Supporting Patients and Families
- Providing a warm, welcoming and supportive experience for patients and their families
- Offering refreshments and comfort measures throughout the day
- Assisting patients with non-clinical needs and helping them feel at ease during treatment
- Observing changes in patient wellbeing and communicating concerns to nursing staff
- Assisting nurses with delegated tasks within your training and competencies
- Helping maintain smooth patient flow and continuity of care
- Working collaboratively with nurses, doctors and the wider healthcare team
- Adapting to changing priorities in a busy healthcare environment
- Maintaining clean, tidy and welcoming treatment areas
- Restocking clinical supplies, procedure trolleys and linen
- Assisting with stock ordering and inventory management
- Providing administrative support as required
We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys helping others and brings empathy, professionalism and a positive attitude to everything they do.
You'll ideally have:
- Experience working in a healthcare or patient-focused environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- A caring and compassionate approach
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- A proactive mindset and willingness to learn
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- A commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centred care
- Hold, or be working towards, a Level 3 or Level 4 Health and Wellbeing qualification
The Bowen Icon Cancer Centre is a joint venture between Evolution Healthcare and Icon Group, established in 2017. The centre provides integrated, non-surgical cancer treatments in an outpatient setting, operating Monday to Friday (8am–6pm) with flexibility for after-hours treatment when required. Each year, approximately 900 new patients receive care across three medical specialties: Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Clinical Haematology, including consultation, treatment, and supportive care. Located within the Bowen Specialist Centre in Wellington, the purpose-built facility features:
- A radiation treatment suite with a linear accelerator, CT scanner, and advanced planning technology
- A day hospital with seven systemic treatment spaces
- Six outpatient consulting rooms
