Shaping care across borders

When Laura Young made the move from Queensland to Bali in mid2025, it wasn’t just a change of location – it was a chance to help build something entirely new.

As Clinical Process Manager and a current Radiation Therapist, Laura spent more than 14 years working across Icon Cancer Centre’s Queensland network and the Group’s Clinical Care team, however, in 2025 she made a leap of faith.

Joining Icon Cancer Centre at Bali International Hospital fulltime in June 2025, bringing with her deep clinical expertise, a strong commitment to the best care possible, and a peoplefirst approach to leadership.

She played an instrumental role setting up the new cancer treatment facility in Bali, to building strong relationships and maintaining the highest standards of care in a new region, Laura embodied what it truly means to be Iconic. And her efforts and expertise were recognised when Laura was named Icon’s 2025 Icon of the Year.

Building a service from the ground up

Joining the Bali team marked an exciting new chapter for Laura and for Icon, with the centre representing Icon’s first site in Indonesia.

As part of the centre’s early clinical leadership, she has played a key role in establishing Icon’s radiotherapy service in the country, supporting the team to embed Icon’s values and robust quality controls, while ensuring patient care is delivered to the best possible standard every time.

“It felt like a rare opportunity to challenge myself and contribute to shaping cancer care in a new region,” said Laura.

Since the centre opened, Laura has been part of significant clinical milestones, including the delivery of Bali’s first gated Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) treatment, and supporting the team to become the first department in Indonesia to use Varian’s specialised suite of technology for DIBH.

More recently, Laura and the team also delivered the first ever Cranial Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) treatment in Bali, cementing another important step in expanding the service’s capabilities for local communities.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding, and I hope I’ve helped build a culture of confidence and clarity, a place where the team feels supported, capable, and proud of the care they deliver,” Laura said.

“Watching the team progress from training through to treatment delivery is something I’ll never forget.”

Leadership grounded in people

For Laura, leadership isn’t about having all the answers, but rather creating an environment where others feel supported, capable and proud of the care they deliver.

Her time in Bali has reinforced the importance of trust, patience and empathy, and in turn deepened her understanding of how strong care is delivered across cultures.

By learning more about her patients and their background, Laura has been able to provide personalised care methods tailored to their needs, ensuring that they feel seen and heard through every step of the process.

“I’ve become even more peoplefocused,” she says.

“Best care possible means holding the same high clinical standards wherever we are, while having the humility and cultural awareness to adapt how those standards are delivered.

“It’s not a copyandpaste model. It’s about meeting people where they are, whether that’s within the healthcare system, the team, or the individual patient.”

Life beyond the clinic

Outside of work, living in Bali has been just as meaningful for Laura and her family.

Her son attends school locally, gaining firsthand experience of another culture, and Laura has embraced the opportunity to immerse herself in the community alongside her colleagues.

“The team has introduced me to so many incredible local dishes,” she laughs.

“Food is definitely their love language.”

Encouraging others to take the leap

For those considering a new opportunity that may be outside of their comfort zone, Laura’s advice is simple: say yes.

“It won’t always be easy, but if you’re open to learning, willing to try new ways of working, and grounded in why you do what you do, the experience will change you in the best possible way.”
